Online event
Are you hosting a refugee or asylum seeker in your home? We can help you communicate with them, no matter what their English level is.
About this event
Are you opening your home to refugees? Good for you, you are amazing. Do you know how good your guest is at speaking English? Are you worried that you won't be able to understand each other?
How English Unlocked training can help
I'm a communication trainer and former English teacher, and I train people to modify their speech so that people with a low to intermediate English level can understand them. In other words, I train people to unlock their English. I usually charge £60 for training of this kind, but due to the Ukrainian crisis I'm waiving my fee (please scroll down to find out if you meet the eligibility criteria for this offer)
How your refugee guest feels
The guest in your home will be feeling vulnerable and anxious. The last thing they want is to see your lips moving and have no idea what you're saying. Anxiety and trauma can impede cognition, plus you might have an unfamiliar accent or just speak more quickly than they can handle. Even if their English level is quite low, I can help you speak in a way that's easier for them to understand. If their English level is fairly good, I'll help you pitch your English at just the right level for them so that they feel reassured but not patronised.
Similar to my usual training.
If you click here you'll learn more about the training I provide. This version will last 90 minutes. You will-
- Find out how it feels to try and understand a foreign language
- Learn 15 tips which will make your speech easier to understand
- Learn to slow down but without sounding patronising
- Get chance to practice
Google Translate
I run another training course on how to use Google Translate in the workplace. I'm going to include two or three of the tips from that course because I think you might find that useful. However, my priority here is to give you a nice clear way of speaking which means you're not totally reliant on your phone to do your talking for you (you'd be surprised how often Google Translate gets it wrong.)
What people say about this course
"The most useful training I have received in a long time. Lots of practical examples that I can use straight away. Thank you!" Kimberly Mullick, teacher.
"I can really see the difference in communication. When speaking to people face to face I have noticed a real sense of relief and relaxation in them, which is great!" Alice Tichborne, solicitor.
Eligibility
- The course will be limited to people who actually have a guest (a named person) on their way to the UK/ already arrived. This isn't for people who are toying with the idea of hosting someone/ want to do so in the future. There will be an eligibility check before the course begins.
- Everyone who is hosting refugees in their home will be eligible, no matter where the refugees are from.
- The people who benefit most from this course are native English speakers, but so long as you can speak English fluently and without effort you are welcome to attend.
- The whole family (kids included) can attend this course. I'll leave it to you to judge if your kids are mature enough to understand.
Your donation
I'm sorry to ask for a donation. It's just to ensure that everyone who picks up a ticket really does intend to come along. Just give what you can afford and rest assured that West End Refugee Service will do great things with your money. The minimum is £1 and if that's all you give it's absolutely fine.
