The talk will be broken up into four sections which are:

"The pieces of the puzzle"

This segment covers a brief history of aspects of the internet and explains how roles and responsibilities emerge from the needs of the internet. If you can see that the origins of technical work still have relatable problems behind them, you can feel more connected with the problems that developers want to solve. As a result, you should then find technical education is more relatable instead of alienating. If you have ever put up an "I'm not technical" wall, you will now be thinking about taking that wall down.

"Natural talent or learned skill"

This segment will present a journey of becoming a web developer that makes mention of various talents and skills that contribute to a good professional skillset.

We must combat the Hollywood notion of the elite developer which often represents hard work and learned skills as natural unquestionable talent. There is no doubt that certain characteristics can make you better at technical work e.g. good attention to detail.

However, coding skills are available for all to learn when coding is perceived as a language, and not a subject reserved only for particular minds. You might have to dismiss any preconceptions or myths that you carry, so that you can see how you can break into the sector.

"Finding a good fit"

This segment will look at a mix of job roles to understand how and why the industry places value on them in a business context.

Whilst a journey into a technical role can be organic and unconventional, the roles themselves still have minimum expectations. These skills then are built upon for seniority and career progression. What makes one coder different from another?

"Can I start small?"

This segment breaks down technical topics and commonly cited terms such as WordPress or HTML and presents them as transferable skills, so that the student can recognise how easy it is to get started and how valuable it can be.

No matter what someone learns, the practical application of education and the collation of evidence can often be the bottleneck to gaining confidence.

It can certainly take time to make a piece of technical work functional and free of errors (bugs), especially in the early days of one's studies. This period of time varies for people and even the smartest and most driven of people still give up during this period. We will talk about how to get past it.

The Speaker

Amin has worked for over a decade in organisations ranging from fast-paced market-entry startups to established or pivoting global corporates.

After a very diverse set of years in the creative and technology sectors, often with direct collaboration with company founders, Amin has seen the business ethos behind the creative and tech sectors that is often missing in today's education.

Amin has also seen first-hand the many new routes into these industries that were not previously available. He is therefore passionately encouraging people in work to explore what creative and technology skills mean for their careers and their passion. He has built Ravensbourne's selection of OCN-accredited courses to achieve this aim.

In contrast to his own Masters in Computer Science, which (to this day) he feels is a rather time-consuming way to go about things, the Dagile courses he lectures on are vocation centric thereby focusing on work-ready skills.
