About this Event

  • Do you see yourself as someone who just lacks willpower?
  • Are you good in the mornings but hopeless in the evenings, when you can’t resist eating?
  • Can you control your eating until you see some tempting food and then don’t care whether you’re overweight and just eat it?

There’s a lot of misunderstanding about willpower – it’s not something you have or you don’t have – it’s about energy.

On this day we will look at why energy may be part of the problem, and discover ways to gently recharge your willpower energy, and reduce the amount you need in order to make changes to how you eat

You’ll learn about the psychology of willpower energy, and we’ll do exercises that will help you to work out what changes you can make to your current way of doing things that will help recharge your willpower battery.

We’ll discover how to minimise the amount of willpower energy you need to make the changes you want to achieve

By the end of the day you’ll understand why willpower seems to have failed you in the past and have techniques and strategies to boost your willpower energy and to know just when to use it

If you’ve been trying to lose weight for a while you’ll know that it’s not easy to shed the pounds and keep them off.

Dieting alone rarely works. That’s because it’s the way you feel and act around food and eating that determines your success.

I’m Dr Helen McCarthy, best selling author of How to Retrain your Appetite and Consultant Clinical Psychologist with 30 years’ experience helping people change unhelpful patterns of feeling, thinking and acting. I’m holding a series of four 1-day online retreats for you to come together to think about and learn ways of developing a new relationship with food.

Learn with a psychologist and change your diet for life

I’ll be using my psychological training and clinical experience to help you develop a happy and healthy relationship with food. Each retreat will focus on an aspect of changing the way you feel and act around food and eating.

Achieving your optimum weight is to do with understanding what goes on in the mind and body. It’s not about the food as such. So much of what causes unhappiness and misery around food and eating is to do with psychology, not nutrition.

I’ve designed the Retreats around the key areas where I know people struggle most with their relationship with food and eating, and where a shift in understanding and mindset can make the biggest difference.

You are welcome to book one or more of the Retreats. If you have particular issues around eating then choose the days that will be most relevant to you. If you want the whole experience, go for all 4.

About the trainer

Dr Helen McCarthy is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Bristol. She works as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in Bristol, Cardiff and London. Helen has 30 years' experience working as a Clinical Psychologist, using second and third wave Cognitive Behavioural Therapies since 1989 and using EMDR since 2005. She developed Appetite Retraining in 2011 to help her clients lose weight without dieting. Her first book “How to Retrain Your Appetite: Lose weight eating all your favourite foods" was published in the UK in January 2019 and in the USA in December 2019. Helen has appeared on the ITV programme "Save Money Lose Weight" and has been featured in Marie Claire, Mail Online, The Sun, Women’s Health, Veggie magazine, The Bristol Post, Wales Online and Western Mail.

She is a graduate of Durham University and Oxford University and was awarded the BPS Diploma in Clinical Psychology from the South East Thames Clinical Psychology Training Scheme in 1989.

Helen is an Accredited Practitioner with the EMDR Association of UK and Ireland and an Advanced Functional Imagery Training Practitioner.
