Overview

Learn how to secure National Manuscripts Conservation Trust and the Friends of the Nations’ Libraries grants.

Nell Hoare is the Secretary for both the National Manuscripts Conservation Trust and the Friends of the Nations’ Libraries and in this webinar hosted by the Scottish Council on Archives, she will explain how to successfully apply for conservation and acquisition grants. Applications from Scotland have declined recently so this webinar is designed to encourage more Scottish applications to these bodies. After this we will hear case studies from successful recipients of grant money from the NMCT and the FNL.

In the second half, there will be a sandbox session and Q&A in which organisations can discuss with Nell their partially formed applications. This kind of dialogical approach should help others mould rough concepts into a viable applications.

NMCT:

Since the National Manuscripts Conservation Trust was founded in 1990 it has awarded grants of over £4m which have enabled the conservation of thousands of historical, literary, scientific, architectural and other vital documents that would otherwise have been lost or faced an uncertain future.

The NMCT welcomes applications from non-national archives and record offices, as well as specialist libraries, universities and museums. They have two grant deadlines each year, April 1st and October 1st.

FNL:

Friends of the Nations’ Libraries gives grants to national and non-national archives, libraries, museums and other cultural heritage organisations. They support the acquisition of rare books, manuscripts, archives, and fine bindings, giving around £250,000-£300,000 a year. There are no application deadlines, they accept them at any time, and can make decisions within days if auction deadlines are looming.
