Description

How to Think About Drones - Professor Nehal Bhuta (European University Institute) - Kent Law School Staff Seminar Series

The use of drone strikes in asymmetric conflicts against transnational non-state armed groups has attracted enormous attention. The legality of weapon is much discussed, although the debate is not especially illuminating. We struggle it seems to put our finger on what discomforts us about this phenomenon and this tactic, if anything at all. In this presentation, I develop a line of thinking about how to think about drone strikes, why they should trouble us, and whether we can – as citizens and concerned publics – can in some way meaningfully address the risks and anxieties to which the practice gives rise.
