Spend the day learning how to master your DSLR camera at this fun and informative class with Guardian photographer David Levene

Learn how to move from auto to manual settings at this fantastic workshop with Guardian photographer David Levene. Over the course of the day, you’ll learn how to operate your digital SLR camera, and receive tips on how to become a more creative photographer. Plus, you’ll have the chance to receive feedback on your work from David, enabling you to improve your photography skills and create images to be truly proud of.

Content

  • An introduction to the manual settings of your digital SLR camera

  • An overview of the basics of creative photography

  • Understanding light, exposure and depth of field

  • How to capture motion in your images

  • Selecting the right lens

  • The key things you need to know about aperture, shutter speed and film speed

  • How to achieve the results you want in a photograph

  • Q&A – an invaluable opportunity to ask David any questions you have about photography

Please note this class is largely theoretical, although there will be opportunities to practice using the settings on your camera during the class. There will be a trip to photograph outside, putting what you've learnt into practice, weather permitting.

What to bring

  • You’re encouraged to bring along your own digital SLR or manual SLR camera to the class, along with any lenses you might like to use

Tutor profile

David Levene has worked as a photographer for the Guardian since 2001. His awards include winning first prize for Live News Photograph of the Year at the Press Photographers Awards in 2010, for his work documenting the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
