What are the opportunities for charities to engage elected members, at different levels of government, in their campaigning activities?
Can elected representatives serve as charity trustees?
What rules exist around conflict of interests?
Can elected representatives help signpost charities to sources of funding?
What funding opportunities exist from parish/town/district/county or unitary councils?
How can charities align their work with priorities set by local or national government?

Bio

Mark Shaw is a PR professional having worked in front line politics for 24 years before becoming a consultant to centre right political parties in emerging democracies across the world. He has worked throughout Africa, the Caribbean, former Russian States and the former Balkan States.

He was first elected to Chesham Town Council in 2009 and became Mayor from 2013 to 2014. From 2013 to 2021 Mark was a Senior Councillor at Buckinghamshire County Council and served as Cabinet Member for Transportation and Strategic Planning before moving to Children’s Services. He was Deputy Leader of the County Council during this period. He also served on Chiltern District Council from 2016 to 2021.

Mark’s general interests are cooking, rugby, football and tennis (a former lines judge and umpire).
