Event description
Values Masterclass: How values can assist effective communication across generations

About this Event

We humans are gloriously diverse and individual.

We humans are also all the same in that we each operate from an underpinning view of the world but different people can have different worldviews.

We humans are all meaning-seeking, sense-making geniuses and it is values which help us do that.

In a very real sense, each of us lives in our own version of the world, so what can we do when worlds collide? Can theoretical models of values and beliefs help us see why other people sometimes look and sound like they come from a different planet? Might an understanding of the structure of values equip us to build meaningful bridges with those other worlds so we can communicate more effectively human to human?

Short answer: Yes!

Where ‘change programmes’ and ‘transformation efforts’ frequently falter is in failing to take account of the worldview and values held by the audience(s). Jumping straight in with the headline benefits, or the vivid picture of the beautiful new future ahead, risks simply bouncing off the outer atmosphere of the world in which the audience lives because there is no resonance with their values. Fortunately it is possible to build connection and introduce the new ideas by harnessing the language and science of values….and we can do it with no loss of personal or professional authenticity.

Values exist in a dynamic relationship with our beliefs and our lived experience. They inform the windows through which we look at the world to determine what ‘it’ all means to us.

Exploring two well established values frameworks Schwartz and Minessence Jackie Le Fèvre will share practical tips distilled from experience and draw upon her background as a zoologist with a particular fascination for primate behaviour.

An interactive workshop with discussion, question and answer and a healthy sprinkling of group work tasks suitable for replication in your own workplace or professional practice.

• Anyone who is expected by other people to be able to explain things so that they make more sense to various audiences
