09.03.22 : Technology enhanced learning - Dr Lauren Clunie (HYMS)
13.04.22: Undertaking difficult interviews in qualitative research - Dr Abisola Balogun-Katung (HYMS)
Abstract:
Qualitative interviews on sensitive topics or issues can be difficult for both the researcher and participant as they elicit powerful emotional responses that can evoke sadness, embarrassment, fear, and anxiety. However, when conducted effectively their benefits can far outweigh any potential risks of harm. Furthermore, they give an opportunity to explore and gain in-depth understandings of the worldviews of participants. Drawing from research experiences, this practical talk, will provide strategies and insight into conducting effective qualitative interviews on sensitive issues, and with populations that may be considered vulnerable. After the talk, attendants will have an understanding of conducting sensitive interviews and/or having ‘difficult’ conversations with vulnerable individuals and be able to apply this knowledge to a range of situations.
