We are setting up a new Action Learning Set for HR Business Partners. This will is a great opportunity to be part of a small group of HR BPs, with an experienced facilitator, who will meet regularly (6 times between Sept 2019 and April 2020) to take an action orientated approach to learning, through working on current work challenges.

If you would like to join this group, please book a place and we will get back to you to confirm the group, once all the places have been filled.

The dates for the meetings are (all 9am to 1pm):

Wednesday 25 September 2019

Tuesday 5 November 2019

Wednesday 18 December 2019

Thursday 6 February 2020

Wednesday 18 March 2020

Tuesday 28 April 2020

If you book on this action learning set, please ensure you can attend all of the dates.

What is an Action Learning Set (ALS)?

An ALS is a group – usually six to eight people – who meet at regular intervals to support one another to consider, learn from and determine actions to do with significant and current work related issues. Set members have two primary roles during the meeting: as problem or issue holder when the attention of the set is on their issue; when the attention of the set is focussed on another set member’s issue. ALSs are often facilitated by an external person for an initial period.

What is an ALS not?

It is not a training course, a talking shop and nor is it group therapy.

How much time is involved?

Five meetings are scheduled between Sept 2019 and April 2020 and to last up to four hours. For the action learning set to be effective, all members need to feel committed to attending all meetings, being proactive in bringing issues to the group, following up on actions and feeing able to participate fully in the meetings.

Where will meetings be held?

A venue for the first meeting has been arranged. Set members are asked to organise other suitable and accessible venues at no cost to set members.

What are the benefits of Action Learning Sets?

  • Learning with help on tackling current tricky work issues
  • Learning and collaborating to help other set members with their current tricky work issues with an emphasis on using and enabling, e.g. coaching, rather than directive techniques
  • Developing your network of contacts with other HRBPS in a supportive learning environment.

How are ALS meetings structured?

Meetings usually begin with check-ins where each of the set members informs the ALS of any significant issues since the previous meeting. This is also an opportunity to indicate whether they have any specific requests for ALS time on a specific issue they are bringing.

Most of the ALS time is spent on issues brought by set members; the time available being split between the various issue holders.

Before the end there is an opportunity to check-out where each set member is able to reflect and share their perspective on how the ALS meeting went.

Arrangements for the next ALS are confirmed and the meeting closes.

The first ALS meeting will address set up arrangements such as ground rules and process before following the format indicated above.
