HPMA London Action Learning Set for Band 6 & & HR Professionals with Mary Casson

Would you like to join a new Action Learning Set and meet regularly with a small group of peers from other organisations?

This will be a small group of HR professionals who will meet every 2 months over a 12 month period to take an action orientated approach to learning and dealing with work challenges.

The first meeting will be on Wednesday 6th September 2pm – 5pm, the second meeting on 8 November 2 – 5pm. Future meetings to be agreed by the group at the first meeting

If you would like to join this group, please book a group and we will get back to you to confirm the group once all the places have been filled.

What is action learning?

An ALS is a group – usually about eight people – who meet at regular intervals to support one another to consider, learn from and determine actions to do with significant and current work related issues.

The group will be actively involved in developing a collaborative process for exploring, progressing and/or resolving work issues in a confidential and supportive environment. Participants will learn ways of doing this and will be facilitated to work on their own 'real time' work issue or support other participants with their issues. As participants develop their skills, they will be able to self manage the group should they wish to do so.

How much time is involved?

Set meetings are scheduled every two to three months and to last three hours. The date for the first meeting has been set and a date for the second meeting suggested. Set members will agree all dates for the year at the first meeting.

Where will meetings be held?

Set members are asked to host the meeting and the meetings could rotate between different member’s offices as long as they are relatively easy to get to. If there are any problems in identifying a suitable venue, please contact the HPMA London team.

Benefits of being in an action learning set

  • Networking

  • Understanding what is happening to others in similar roles

  • Support and signposting to various resources

  • Opportunities on possible positions & training in peer organisations and further

  • Contribution and discussion on difficult situations (shared solutions offered)

Commitment

A commitment to the process is needed. The group will need to meet on a regular basis, as decided by the members and facilitator at the start. As a suggestion, groups may meet every 2 to 3 months.

A lack of commitment not only lets other members down but also changes the dynamic of the group and can affect the trust between members, which in turn reduces the potential for learning and resolutions. The groups are small, so if people don’t attend, it has an impact on the sustainability of the group.

Background of the facilitator

Mary is a senior HR professional with experience of facilitating ALS in NHS and change processes in private and public sector organisations.
