HR essentials for the school leader

This course will ensure that participants become confident to lead and manage the employment life-cycle including understanding recruitment and selection – advertising, avoiding discrimination, equal opportunities, job descriptions and person specifications. Employment - Offers, contracts and necessary checks and Ending the Employment Relationship - Contractual rights following resignation and dismissal.
Whether you are a head teacher, principal, governor or School Business Manager, you will:
- Learn how to avoid discrimination and promote equal opportunities within the recruitment and selection process;
- Become familiar with the necessary pre-employment checks;
- Understand the elements of an effective disciplinary investigation;
- Understanding the role of an Investigating Officer;
- Learn to assess the difference between conduct and capability;
- Understand when to suspend an employee;
- Understand the difference between misconduct and gross misconduct;
- Learn about the requirements of a Disciplinary Hearing;
- Understand the importance of having a grievance policy;
- Learn how to deal with a grievance informally;
- Learn how to recognise a formal grievance;
- Understand how to hold an effective grievance meeting and how to conduct a grievance investigation; and understand how to effectively manage an appeal.
Providing a step-by-step guide, participants will leave the course with a better understanding of the general employment life-cycle including the formal processes involved in managing disciplinary and grievance procedures. Participants will be provided with an opportunity to reflect on a number of scenarios and examples to help build confidence and develop management strategies.

Do I need my membership number to book?
Yes. If you are booking a member place you will be required to enter the correct membership number. You can find your membership number by phoning membership on 0300 3030333 option 2.

Can I pay by invoice?
Yes, when you get to the payment part of the registration form, you will see that it defaults to Credit or Debit Card Payment - click on the black triangle to the right of this default and you will be able to select Payment by Invoice.
Is my booking transferrable?
Bookings may only be transferred at the discretion of the Professional Development team. These will need to be made in writing to firstname.lastname@example.org before the event. Transfers and cancellations may be subject to a charge.
Within 20 working days - 25% charge
Within 10 working days - 50% charge
Within 5 working days - 75% charge
Within 2 working days - 100% charge
Can I update my registration information?
Any updates to your booking must be made in writing to the Professional Development team at email@example.com
Does the name on the booking need to match the attendee?
The names of each individual attendee must be entered during the booking process along with a unique email address for each attendee as this will be used for the final confirmation.
