Description

The Good Work Agenda - What does this mean for HR Leaders in 2019?

This is the third Midlands Regional HR Leaders Conference, it is taking place on Friday 1 March in the Lakeside Suite at the Jurys Inn Hinckley Island.

This is an opportunity for all HR Leaders from across the Midlands region to meet with peers, network, learn and hopefully be inspired! If you are a senior HR Leader (Director level or Head of HR) we’d be delighted if you could join us.

Our opening speaker is Helen Hughes, Shakespeare Martineau Legal Director who will look at what the Good Work Agenda means from a legal perspective, including what HR leaders need to be aware of for their HR strategy and practice.

The second sesion will be led by Dr John McGurk, CIPD Head of Policy and Insight, UK Nations and Regions who will discuss:

The squeezed, the struggling and the sorted: Work and Life in the Midlands and beyond - Insights from CIPD’s UK Working Lives Survey and the developing Good Work approach.

CIPD’s UK Working Lives survey based on a sample of around 6000 UK employees, sub divided by nation and region, and uniquely tapping into the view of employees, provides a rich source of insight about how people feel about work in Britain.

We know that there is a widespread feeling that Britain though working for some, isn’t working for many. That feeling which was at the centre of how people voted in the EU referendum, is deeply rooted in the labour market and the nature of jobs. Though employment is at record highs, and the standard measure of unemployment is at record lows, the feeling that work is often getting worse, that real earnings are falling; and that people are stuck without options is part of today driving narrative.

Equally potent in the perception that a small number of people in elite jobs in big cities are doing rather well. The smaller English towns feel especially neglected, seeing a better deal for devolved nations and the dynamism of big cities, as they scrape by. The Midlands with some major cities and many towns is an barometer of the working state of the nation.

How real are these perceptions? What do people really think? Dr John McGurk will present the data form CIPD’s 2018 UKWL survey focusing on the Midlands and comparing it with other nations and regions. He will then describe CIPD’s unique approach to measuring job quality based on seven dimensions of Good Work, which CIPD see as pivotal to inclusion, prosperity and productivity. He will invite discussion and debate on how we can take this vision forward for the Midlands as a region and help people and development professionals to contribute to the building Good work agendas in their area.

Our third speaker (to be confirmed) will provide a business perspective on the key issues for HR Leaders in the current climate.

The event will close with a networking lunch in the Lakeside Suite between 13:00 and 14:00.
