Overview

A brand new, youth led performance exploring power, creation, and what happens when imagination pushes beyond its limits.

Hubris is a brand new, original piece of theatre created by the Cast Offs Youth Theatre Company, a new generation of young creatives working with Chol Theatre as part of Children's Capital of Culture 2025.

Drawing on the inspiration of Frankenstein, Hubris is sparked by the same questions that inspired Mary Shelley - what happens when we create something we can’t control, and where does imagination take us when we push it too far? The story moves between past and present, between people and the technology shaping their world. At its centre are Mary and Percy,  two characters caught between first love and an experiment that slowly grows beyond them, shifting in ways they never expected.

What to expect

This isn’t a traditional theatre show, and it’s not in a traditional theatre space.

Inside the atmospheric Imperial Building, the audience steps into a close up, immersive environment where the performance unfolds around you. The show blends original writing, movement, and sound created in Rotherham, shaped directly by the voices and ideas of the young company.

Rather than giving you answers, Hubris invites you to lean in and experience a world being built, and unbuilt, right in front of you. It’s bold, unexpected, and made for anyone curious, open minded, or looking for something different. Whether you’re a regular theatre goer or totally new to it, this is a performance that welcomes you in.
