About this Event

Event overview:

Everyone gets anxious sometimes. We know that children tend to worry about different things at different ages, and their anxiety is influenced by things that have happened in the past and what is currently going on in the world around them. Children show they are anxious in different ways, and it can be hard for parents to work out whether their child’s behaviour is something for them to worry about, or whether it is fairly typical given their age and circumstances. It can also be difficult sometimes to know what to do to support them.

This talk will help parents to recognise signs of anxiety in their child and consider whether this is something they might need to be concerned about. It will explain what the research tells us about the kinds of things that tend to contribute to the development of anxiety in children; and provide parents with an overview of some evidence-based strategies for building confidence and managing anxious feelings, thoughts and behaviour in their child.

Speaker bio:

Vicki qualified as a clinical psychologist in 1996, and has worked with children and young people for nearly 25 years for the NHS as part of the Islington Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service for inpatient and community-based teams, in health, social care and school settings. Although she uses a variety of models in her work, she has formed a particular interest in using CBT in child and family settings. She is accredited as a CBT therapist by the BABCP and takes a lead in developing and supporting the provision of CBT for children and families across her CAMHS service.

Vicki has provided training and consultation in CBT with children for professionals from a range of agencies across the UK and in Europe. With colleagues she set up and ran the UCL/Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/MSc in CBT for Children and Young People for many years; and is currently Programme Director for the UCL/AFC Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners Course. She is co-author of a book and journal articles on the topic of CBT for children; and wrote guidance for parents on BBC Bitesize about how to support their anxious child during the coronavirus pandemic.
