The humanities and social sciences are fields of human activity that aim at

knowledge of a particular kind: they are self-aware intellectual disciplines that are

simultaneously reflective, often using qualitative methods, and reflexive, seeking an

understanding of ourselves, both individually and collectively, as human beings.

Here, we will speak of the ‘human sciences' as a shorthand comprising both areas of

investigative activity.

Network science, meanwhile, is an interdisciplinary field of research that has recently

emerged from its mathematical origins in graph theory, principally through the

development of algorithms, data structures, programming languages, and other

techniques for graph computing. While it investigates an enormous variety of

complex phenomena, from physical-engineering telecommunications systems to

biological population ecosystems, the study of social networks is one of its core

areas of application.

Join PI Brian Ball (Philosophy) and co-I Giovanni Petri (Network Science) for a skills

bootcamp (Oct 14-16) and/or a follow on research showcase event (Oct 17-18) at

Northeastern University London as part of their British Academy funded Talent

Development Award project on Human and Network Sciences.

Intended primarily for early career researchers (including students) in the humanities

and social sciences, the skills bootcamp aims to show both how can be useful to

human scientists through engagement with the PolyGraphs project. The follow on

event will showcase the value of graph computing for research in the human

sciences.
