About this event

Learn how gym treadmills were pioneered on plantations and how denim jeans were once clothing for enslaved people in this eye-opening exploration of the legacy of slavery. From art galleries to football stands, banks to hospitals, grand country houses to kitchen cupboards, Renay and Arisa will delve into the haunting origins of these everyday places and objects.

Renay and Arisa will be in conversation with The National Archives’ collections specialist Philippa Hellawell. Their online conversation will last approximately 30 to 40 minutes, followed by an audience question and answer session.

Renay Richardson is an award-winning producer based in London. Her work focuses on empowering audiences and creating social change.

Arisa Loomba is a PhD student of Global and Imperial History at the University of Oxford, working in partnership with the National Trust.
