About this Event

**This event has now sold out, if you are press and wish to attend please email the organiser at oscar.jenz@amnesty.org.uk**

Behind the glitz and the glamour of cities such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) lies an ugly reality: since 2011 the UAE authorities have embarked on an unprecedented crackdown on freedom of expression and association in the country, shrinking the space for dissent to near-obliteration.

In addition to this, the UAE has emerged as a key player in regional politics, funding dictators and armed groups in Yemen, Libya, Sudan and Egypt as part of an ever-expanding campaign to crush dissent not only at home but across the Middle East.

This day marks the beginning of our Global Week of Action for Ahmed Mansoor, ‘the last human rights defender left in the UAE’ who was imprisoned in May last year. Come along to Amnesty UK for a discussion exploring this ongoing case and the state of human rights in the UAE with an amazing expert panel.

Speakers:

  • Matthew Hedges, Academic freedom campaigner and former prisoner in the UAE
  • Safa Al Ahmad, Award-winning Saudi journalist and filmmaker
  • Tarek Megerisi, Libyan political analyst and researcher

Chair: Oscar Jenz, UAE and Iran Country Coordinator, Amnesty International UK.

Agenda:

5:00: Oscar Jenz - Introduction and welcome

5:05: Oscar Jenz – Repression and censorship: The case of Ahmed Mansoor

5:15: Matthew Hedges – Academic freedom in the UAE: Lessons from fieldwork

5:30: Safa Al Ahmad – The UAE’s war in Yemen

5:45: Tarek Megerisi – The UAE and Libya

5:55: Panel discussion and Q&A
