The Human Rights Act 1998 enshrined a number of internationally accepted legal principles, derived from the European Convention of Human Rights. And this Act has important implications for the work of Government departments, sometimes in areas where you would least expect it.

This workshop will provide an introduction to key human rights issues you should be aware of when designing and delivering Government policy including—

· The incorporation of human rights in DOMESTIC LAW

· What are CONVENTION RIGHTS and are they absolute?

· How to ANALYSE an issue involving HUMAN RIGHTS

· How the courts approach interpreting and applying the ECHR

· Human rights OBLIGATIONS for PUBLIC AUTHORITIES

· ENFORCING convention rights

· What if legislation is NOT COMPATIBLE with human rights?
