Course Profile

The Human Toolbox™ Practitioners Course provides the foundation for using The Human Toolbox™ Programme as a psycho-educational and holistic framework for working with young people and adults.  This visual and systemic model raises awareness, lowers anxiety, builds confidence and provides a platform for positive change and improved wellbeing.

The course is designed for counsellors, teachers, teaching assistants, health professionals, youth workers and anyone who works with those suffering from anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, low self-confidence, dependency, weight issues, sleeplessness, inability to form or sustain relationships, lack of direction, low motivation or poor physical health. The Human Toolbox™ Programme is effective in promoting positive change in adults, young people and children.

Course Entitlement

A CPD certificate verifying 21 hours of work will be provided at the end of the course, along with a Human Toolbox™  Practitioners Certificate for those who successfully complete the course. Delegates will receive the Practitioner Handbook which includes hard copies of all the slides together with photocopyable worksheets and supporting exercises for personal use and for use with clients in a one to one and small group setting.

On satisfactory completion of the course delegates will be invited to license the programme for an annual fee of £120 (this can be paid monthly).  Licensed practitioners will have access to the Practitioners area of the Human Toolbox website where they will be able to download the slideshows, resources and worksheets. Licensed Practitioners will also have access to the Practitioners Forum where they can chat with other practitioners and have access to ongoing support, advice and guidance.  Licensed Practitioners will also be able to advertise their services in the Human Toolbox Directory.

Previous delegates say...

"I use the materials daily in my 1:1 client work and in small nuture groups,  I work with KS3 and KS4 children and the impact is powerful and immediate. The course is informative and engaging and Lindy delivers it in a way that is easy to understand and entertaining.  Our group of 11 shared a great deal, and laughed a lot."

"Discussion opportunities were great and well facilitated. I have lots of thoughts about how to integrate this into my health practice. The Human Toolbox is a wonderful idea and much needed. The concept and the stepped programme is just brilliant. I would like regular development days and as many resources as you can create."

"I attended because I was interested in self development.  As someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression for most of my adult life I was interested in learning more about the programme. I have shared the content with my entire family including my children, and anyone else who will listen.  It has brought relief and understanding and has improved my wellbeing beyond belief.  I wish all humans knew this stuff -the world would be a happier place"

Day 2

Introduction to The Human Toolbox™ Programme:

What Humans Do…

This powerful, visual 'story' underpins The Human Toolbox Programme and provides immediate relief and recognition enabling clients to engage from the very first session.  What humans do... explains why humans:

  • have feelings, sensations and emotions
  • become overwhelmed with difficult feelings
  • explode with rage and hurt others
  • implode with anxiety or depression and hurt themselves
  • turn to harmful distraction or dependency
  • find it difficult to sleep peacefully
  • feel exhausted and demotivated
  • suffer with physical stress related illness
  • use defensive behaviours to protect themselves
  • often feel lonely, disconnected and worthless

The Control Tool

The Human Brain controls everything we do, say, think and feel. From the moment we're born to the moment we die the brain is tasked with ensuring our survival, both as an individual and as a species.

Understanding how the brain works removes the ‘mystery’ surrounding behaviour, and provides a platform for positive change.

This module:

  • Explains MacLeans  ‘Triune Brain’ model
  • Explores the effect of parenting styles on the developing brain
  • Explains the powerful Amygdala and its role in survival
  • Explains mirror neurons and their role in emotional contagion
  • Explores developmental ‘stages’ and the effect of change or trauma
  • Explores working with clients who are emotionally developmentally ‘delayed’
  • Provides useful strategies for helping clients find emotional/rational ‘balance’

The Input Tools

The brain needs a constant flow of good information for it to work efficiently. Information about the ‘outside world’ is provided through the five senses, and information about the ‘inside world’ is provided by the highly intelligent gut and heart.  When we don’t pay attention to this vital ‘input’ our safety is compromised along with our emotional and physical wellbeing.

This module focuses on:

  • The five major senses and their role in our survival
  • The intelligent gut and heart and the vital information they provide
  • The stress response and the powerful physical effect of adrenaline and cortisol
  • The power of meditation and mindfulness
  • Useful mindfulness strategies and exercises
  • Explains the vital role of the Vagus nerve and the 'data highway''
  • Stimulating the Vagus and developing good vagal tone

The Back-up Tool

Understanding the vital role human emotion plays in our survival is essential for good health and wellbeing. Human emotion comes to make us take notice, and where possible to take action, to keep ourselves safe and well. When we fail to understand this or we try to ignore difficult or important feelings they ‘back-up’ making us angry and explosive, or anxious and withdrawn.

This module focuses on:

  • The purpose and power of emotion
  • The four component parts of emotion
  • Recognising ‘old’ recycled emotion
  • Recognising defensive and protective behaviour
  • The impact of early years on our EI (Emotional Intelligence)
  • Strategies and techniques for processing and managing difficult feelings
  • The ‘feelings continuum’
  • The amygdala and the 'chemistry' of stress

Day 3

The Release Tools

Humans have in-built tools for relieving stress, anxiety and depression, and for promoting energy flow, good health and happiness.  Before we can tap into these powerful tools we first need to understand the stress cycle and the biochemistry which drives it.

This module focuses on:

  • The four ‘happy hormones’ The six powerful Release Tools and how they ‘rebalance’ and regulate our chemical, emotional and physical state
    • Oxytocin
    • Seratonin
    • Dopamine
    • Endorphin
  • Explores the 6 Release Tools and explains how they are the 'antidote' to stress
  • Provides strategies, worksheets and exercises for incorporating the Release Tools to promote improved sleep quality, energy levels, happiness and wellbeing.

The Fuel Tools

Humans need a constant supply of ‘fuel’ to stay fit, healthy and vibrant.  We know when we need 'topping-up' because we become tired, irritable, unfocused, demotivated and discontent. Learning how to 'refuel' efficiently is an essential life skill.

This module focuses on:

The six major Human Fuels:

  • Air - the brain and the body are chemically dependent on oxygen, yet we are never taught routinely how to breath properly. Learning how to breath efficiently and restoratively is the focus of this section.
  • Light - humans need regular exposure to sunlight and nature to produce essential Vitamin D.
  • Sleep – understanding how to achieve good quality sleep is essential for brain and body health
  • Nutrition - understanding the effect of blood sugar on mood, weight, renewal and growth is an essential first step to making good food choices. The Human Toolbox focuses on intelligent eating rather than dieting or cutting out food groups.
  • Hydration – the brain is approximately 75% water and needs constant re-hydration to maintain focus, direction and retention. The body also needs good hydration for growth, cleansing and lubrication.
  • Purpose - without it we become detached, lethargic and life feels pointless and unrewarding. This human fuel is as essential as food and water. The module explores how we find a sense of purpose - and how we recover it when it's been lost.

The Connect Tools

Humans are social animals and our physical and emotional wellbeing is greatly enhanced through warm, safe, loving and enduring relationships. Without ‘good connection’ we feel lonely, isolated and anxious.

This module focuses on:

  • Optimism and the chemistry of positive thinking
  • The power of kindness and compassion and its role in protecting the heart
  • Developing empathy and the capacity to reach out to others
  • Gratitude and its ability to restore emotional balance
  • Love in all its forms, including self love ….and tough love.
  • Useful self awareness strategies and exercises to promote healthy connection

The 3-day Human Toolbox™ Practitioner Course will provide delegates with a clear understanding of the programme and how to use it in a 1:1 and nurture group setting.  All those who complete the course will receive hard copy of the worksheets and resources. Those who want to have the Human Toolbox Programme electronic slides, worksheets, workbooks and other resources together with access to the Practitioners Forum and and entry in the Human Toolbox Practitioner Directory will be invited to license the programme upon successful completion of the course.

The Human Toolbox Company Limited

Lindy Wheeler, MBACP (Accredited) Counsellor and author developed the Human Toolbox™ Programme in direct response to the many questions raised by her young clients.

In 2003, as a newly qualified counsellor, Lindy was invited to set up a youth counselling service and worked with over 600 young people and their families in the following decade. Many of her young clients were unable to engage effectively with their education and also struggled with their lives outside of school.  Although each client brought their own individual story to the counselling room the underlying issues were the same.  Frustration, loneliness, low self esteem and self confidence, feelings of failure, lack of hope and the overwhelming need to feel heard and valued. Predictably many had developed defensive behaviours to protect themselves from further difficult and unmanageable feelings.  They found themselves caught in a destructive cycle and urgently needed help to understand and break it... before it broke them!

The Human Toolbox™ Programme is the result of over 10,000 client hours, much research and even more trial and error. Whilst it started as a visual model for working with children and adolescents it has proven to be equally effective in adult therapy and as a framework for group work and systemic family therapy.

The Human Toolbox™  Programme raises awareness and reduces the fear and misunderstanding around mental health by explaining the mind/body connection. The Human Toolbox™ Programme promotes good health and wellbeing through simple, visual lessons coupled with sound strategies and techniques for reducing stress and anxiety and restoring emotional balance.

The Human Toolbox™ Program is available as follows:

  • The Human Toolbox™ Tools for Schools
  • The Human Toolbox™ eBook series
  • The Human Toolbox™ seminars and workshops
  • The Human Toolbox™ Practitioner Training
  • The Human Toolbox™ Facilitator Training
  • The Human Toolbox™ Mentoring and coaching
  • The Human Toolbox™ Supervision
  • The Human Toolbox™ Workplace wellbeing
