In this workshop we will question what makes an effective humanities curriculum. We will explore how to use a skills based approach to cover the National Curriculum, and beyond. The day will include a learning walk to observe outstanding humanities provision, a coached book look, as well as an opportunity to review humanities in your own setting and create an action plan.

What are the challenges of delivering an outstanding Humanities curriculum in your school?
We will review approaches to the Humanities through time. Where are we now, and what challenges do we face as leaders of Humanities? We will cover knowledge vs Skills based approaches to learning, and take in an overview of the National Curriculum, and beyond.
0930 Learning Walk.
Tour of Federation classrooms to observe outstanding Humanities provision and teaching using a skills based, creative approach. This will be followed by the opportunity to reflect on what participants have seen.
1115 Coached ‘Book Look’ and Exploration of Planning.
Participants will gain greater understanding of what is meant by outstanding outcomes in the humanities subjects, and how they can support colleagues to facilitate this.
1245 Workshop: Bespoke Curriculum Mapping.
Creating an outstanding humanities curriculum with full coverage of the National Curriculum, tailored to your setting. Using the National Curriculum as a starting point, we will facilitate participants to interpret it effectively, and move beyond its confines.
1330 Coaching and Action Plan Writing.
Opportunity to begin an action plan to move your humanities curriculum towards Outstanding and beyond. We will explore how action plans can be used effectively to develop participants own leadership of humanities, and enable them to facilitate the development of others.
1445 Question & answer session, evaluation and feedback.
1500 End of day.
