Join us for this screening of Illusions Perdues and enjoy the best of French cinema (with English subtitles). This is the first session of a series of free screenings of French and Francophone films organised by the School of Humanities at York St John University in collaboration with the Alliance Française de York. From historical classics to genre-bending films and literary adaptations, we hope to widen access to Francophone cultures and French history in our city. All films will have English subtitles to be accessible for all.

Starring Benjamin Voisin and Cécile de France, Illusions perdues is an adaptation of the novel by Honoré de Balzac. Lucien (Benjamin Voisin) is a young poet in nineteenth-centuryFrance. He has high hopes to become famous and inscribe his name in the annals of French literature. He leaves his family business in the countryside and comes to the city of lights, Paris. Left to his own devices in this city, the young man will discover the backstage ongoings of the publishing world. This historical drama is set against the backdrop of a lawless industry where only the most ambitious succeed. Will Lucien survive his illusions of fame and success, or will he have to face reality and abandon his dreams? The film lasts 150 minutes and is PG-rated.

Freedom of Speech

Freedom of speech within the law and academic freedom are core principles of our University and underpin our mission to foster intellectual curiosity, rigorous debate, and the pursuit of knowledge. Our staff / students / SU colleagues are entitled to express their ideas and views, providing they do not violate the law. The law rightly prohibits speech that incites violence, terrorism and hate, but does not prohibit speech that others may find upsetting or offensive.

As a University that embodies social justice, we expect people to treat each other with dignity and respect, but it is not our role to censor ways of thinking or stifle debate between those who hold opposing views.

We understand that it can be frustrating to face views and perspectives that do not reflect our inclusive ethos at York St John University. However, we will not take disciplinary action against staff or students for lawful expression of their views, regardless of petitions, media campaigns or other external pressures.
