This one day 'Humanities: Text and Context' Teacher Conference is for Teachers, HE Advisors, Heads of Sixth Form, and other colleagues who support students through the transition into Higher Education.

Engage with our academic experts in English, Film, History and Modern Languages on the latest trends in higher education. Find out about the benefits of studying humanities, explore the growing, interdisciplinary field of Digital Humanities and ask questions about the impactful research happening at the University of Southampton. Learn more about our curriculum development and what your students can expect from their time with us, as well as understanding the variety of career pathways open to our graduates.

You'll hear from our world-leading experts on the very latest developments in research and teaching in your field. We have designed the agenda so that you can mix and match your sessions, according to your own interests and what might benefit your daily practice the most.

Provisional sessions include:

- Humanities and the Cosmos: We humans are at a critical moment. But how can we put our story into perspective, and why are humanities subjects useful to us as we make sense of our many problems and try our best to solve them? This talk goes from the Big Bang to now, contains some dragons and two dinosaurs, whilst explaining a few things about humanity and the humanities along the way!

- Demystifying Digital Humanities: This talk will outline the growing, interdisciplinary field of Digital Humanities within the HE context. We will discuss the various approaches involved, from building digital infrastructures, undertaking critical data studies and building virtual realities to performing computational analysis. We will also explore the expertise and resources offered by the dedicated team at Southampton, further discussing how the Digital Humanities are currently being embedded within the research and pedagogical practices of the University’s School of Humanities.

You will also be able to attend a break out session focusing on one of the following subjects;

1: English & Film (Stephanie Jones & Louis Bayman)

2: History (Christopher Prior)

3: Modern Languages - Languages, Cultures and Linguistics (Aude Campmas)

You will have plenty of opportunity to talk to our students about what is it like studying at Southampton and how they have navigated the transition into Higher Education at a Russell Group institution.

These events are a great opportunity to ask current undergraduates questions about the advice and guidance your students might be looking for, including around the application process, and living away from home.

We know that you really value the opportunity to catch up with colleagues and network, so we have built plenty of time in to the agenda to facilitate those valuable conversations.

This conference takes place at our Highfield campus, and we are delighted to be able to offer limited complimentary overnight accommodation and an evening meal to those who have traveled from further afield. Please book early to avoid disappointment.
