An excellent opportunity to work with Patrick McGhee an internationally recognised writer, teacher, journalist, researcher and psychotherapist. Drawing on recent research we will be looking at a wide range of issues including:

  • Can humour help protect us from depression?

  • How can looking at the funny side of life help us deal with anxiety?

  • Can a sense of humour help us live longer?

  • How can therapists use humour in their treatment of clients?

  • Can humour make us more forgiving and empathetic?

  • Can humour make us more compassionate?

  • Can humour help improve psychosocial adjustment in young people?

  • Should mindfulness training take 47 days or 6 minutes?

  • How can humour help us at work?

  • Is humour on social media good for our mental health,or not?

In this interactive workshop Professor Patrick McGhee covers practical tips for boosting our psychological well being and coping with stress. Participants will find out about the latest research on humour and mental health as well as a range of practical tips for everyday life and well being. The focus is on clients and practitioners working together and on the integration of research, practice and experience. Professor McGhee will draw upon his research to highlight what therapists and clients laugh about in therapeutic sessions.

The workshop is aimed at anyone with an interest in mental health and is open to members of the public as well as those working in the caring professions, including therapists, counsellors, teachers, nurses, customer service specialists, social workers, llama breeders, youth workers and service managers.

Patrick McGhee's Bio:

Professor Patrick McGhee is a Chartered Psychologist, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a UK National Teaching Fellow and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He has a First Class Honours Degree from the University of Glasgow and a PhD from Oxford University. He has completed CPD programmes in Executive Leadership at Ashridge and at Harvard Business School. He also has a Certificate in International Auditing from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). He is an advisor to INTCAS (AMLAPS) Ltd and a non-executive director at the Office of the Northamptonshire Police and Crime Commissioner.

Following an initial period working in the NHS as a Research Fellow in Psychiatry and Psychology, he has been Dean, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor at some of the largest and most socially diverse universities in the UK. He is a well-known advocate for inclusive and progressive higher education, a newspaper columnist for The Guardian, and for BBC News and a regular social media commentator. Patrick has been involved in developing international partnerships over the last 20 years in Brazil, India, Russia, China, Malaysia, Japan, Brussels/EU, USA, Mexico and Morocco amongst others. He is the author of many academic articles, chapters, books and edited collections. Professor McGhee has been listed in Who's Who since 2011 and his interests include chess (ex-Scottish U21 international), country walks, classical music and football.
