HUNDERTWASSER: Prints and Posters

Live Online Class: Tuesday 26th August 2025 6pm BST

+ 14 Days Recording Access

Taught by Lucy McGeown

Hundertwasser the enigmatic German born artist and architect is best known for his eccentric buildings, most famously Hundertwasser Haus in Vienna. But he was also a prolific painter and produced beautiful printed works and poster commissions in his lifetime.

His prints and posters are distinct for their use of metal foil embossings and startling imagery. These complicated, intricately painted images are rich with layers of colour and reflective metal details. They represent his belief in humans' deep connection to nature, the power of nature and the spiritual life force that exists between all things.

The repetition of fine lines create undulating horizons and waves across the paintings, building up to form layers symbolic of time, earth and soil, history and broader galaxies. This conflating of topological appearances with symbolic representations compound the values each piece of work is imbued with. These richly vibrant posters radiate with joy and wonder, the saturated colours epitomise the celebration of life he was always aiming to nurture in his work and the graphic style is undeniable, the font-his own- and foiling set into the landscapes create powerful and beautifully uplifting images.

We will be looking at some of his most famous commissioned posters such as ‘Each Raindrop Is A Kiss From Heaven’ 1981 (for a conference on the effects of acid rain) ‘Plant Trees Avert Nuclear Peril’ 1980 (for the critical mass energy project) ‘Enjoy Your City’ 1998 (for a New York City public transport campaign) and ‘Conservation Week’ 1974(poster for nature conservation council New Zealand). As well as these we will be looking at the original painted works these posters were based on.

ARE YOU TRYING TO BOOK VIA THE EVENTBRITE PHONE APP?!

We have been in touch with Eventbrite, and they have informed us that currently you cannot book tickets to online events in their app. It's very frustrating and we have been assured they are working on a solution. In the meantime, we recommend that you book tickets to our events outside of the iOS app - either via a web browser or a desktop. If you book our classes regularly we recommend deleting the eventbrite App.
