Event description
This is a 2 day course running from 09:00 - 17:00 on Domestic Hydronics including surveying for retrofit ASHP

About this event

This is a 2 day course running from 09:00 - 17:00 on Domestic Hydronics.

The course will cover:

  • Why S Y and W plans rarely condensate.
  • Fundamental differences of heating hot water in cylinders (S/Y plan against priority hot water);
  • Looking at priority hot water and why it’s the only way forward.
  • What and how do NTC’s work and evaluating the difference between NTC controlled heating and cylinder stat (on off) controlled heating.
  • Radiator Sizing – lets remove the guesswork.
  • Head and system resistance explained.
  • Basic flow and velocity requirements and how to size pipes.
  • What does your pump need to do? How do you select and set the correct one.
  • Understanding pump maps/graphs and how to size pumps.
  • Understanding the effect of DT on the system as a diagnostic tool.
  • Balancing – why almost nobody does it correctly.
  • Why isn’t that radiator hot?
  • Hot pipes – cold radiators – what’s going on?
  • Understanding hydronic separation and when and how to use it.
  • Taking the taboo from low loss headers. It’s just another piece of pipe. How they work, when to use them, how to size them.
  • Just as importantly when not to use it.
  • When and why to use close coupled T’s and how to size them.
  • Realising why lots of UFH is incorrectly piped.
  • Reverse returns - what’s that all about.
  • Single pipe systems.
  • Low Temperature system.
  • Sizing in Plastic.
  • Air in the System.
  • ASHP – surveying for retrofit.

Organiser Heating Academy Northampton

Organiser of Hydronics for Domestic Mon/Tue 29-30 Nov

Knowledge is a great thing to share.

I am all but retired and originally from an Electrical Engineering background.

There seems to be a massive gap between the 'University Degree' with theoretical maths needing awesome formulas, and part 3 of a plumbers certificate. My aim is to close that gap with my range of one or two day courses. With ASHP on the horizon this knowledge is even more imperative.

A couple of days certainly won’t get you ready to design hospital sized heating systems, but it will enable you to understand the best way to get the right amount of hot water at the right temperature to the right place at the right time in a domestic environment regardless of the heat source.

I talk in installers lingo using the most basic of units and schoolboy maths aiming to deliver the principles and examples of how it all works. I love seeing the ‘light-bulb’ moment when it all ‘clicks into place’ for yet another attendee. The classes are small and the atmosphere relaxed, so please do get in touch and come along.
