Description

Lisa Watts brings her playful craft of performance to Sheffield Institute of Arts.

This exhibition is a series of live actions that happen in the gallery over three weeks. The actions transform everyday materials, such as kitchen roll, bin liners and bird seed into magical events. It also has a video installation where the everyday materials and objects become magical.

Watts is inspired by her father, who now aged seventy-eight, was born into the post WW2 generation of people who ‘made do and mend’. He has always mended things around the family home in inventive ways, such as mending the cistern in the toilet with a bank card, or mending children’s goggles with piping from packaging. He also invented solo games, to amuse himself, with everyday objects, such as sticking things on the ceiling with a retractable metal tape measure. Most often, his objects become reassigned, or repurposed, to make something else work in the domestic environment, whereas his daughter, Lisa Watts, allows the objects and materials to perform for themselves with very little use of tools or adhesive agents. She develops a craft of performance and video with them to turn them into a magical art event in the gallery.

Lisa Watts' eclectic practice combines performance, sculpture, photography and video. Her work converts everyday objects and materials into magical events. At once playful, yet serious, these performances take simple gestures, leaving both a sculptural residue and a powerful after-image.

'an artist with the courage to present simple yet powerful images and whose every gesture carries conviction' – Performance Magazine

'(she) continues to explore issues of perception and reality, as well as, aspects of individual physicality under pressure' – The Herald

Lisa Watts has exhibited and performed extensively, in the UK and abroad. lisawatts.co.uk
