Description

As it is Mental Health week in the UK (starting May 14th 2018), let’s talk about Mental Health in the Black, South Asian and Muslim diasporas.

‘I Am Not What Is Broken’ (IANWIB) is a textual and visual collection of first-hand accounts from and for the Black, South Asian and Muslim diasporas about overcoming traumas and Mental Health issues; they are students, parents, journalists, artists, teachers, activists or media personalities sharing their journey, struggles, tips and hopes for the future.

WHEN

The event will be held on Monday May 14th at 6:30pm at SOAS, at the Wolfson Lecture Theatre (Paul Webley Wing in the North Block of Senate House)

WHAT

The project and its launch event have three aims:

1. Call for more biographical stories by people that viewers/readers can relate to.
2. Discuss the power of storytelling in healing journeys.
3. Promote faith- and culture-sensitive counselling services.

The event will feature:

- An introduction to the project

- An interactive panel discussion

- Spoken word and poetry

- Short videos

- Spoken/Read testimonies

- Short Film screening: A Strange Perfume of Jasmine
