Description

Association for Education and Ageing's 15th Annual Frank Glendenning Memorial Lecture

Professor Paul Kingston

Professor of Ageing and Mental Health and Director of the Centre for Ageing Studies, University of Chester.

"I am still learning" - reflections on reducing loneliness and isolation for older people in the post-modern world

Goya produced the bewildering lithograph Aun aprendo (‘I am still learning’) in 1826 at the age of 80, two years before his death.

The image is the starting point of a wide-ranging and reflective lecture by Professor Kingston on loneliness and social isolation of older people and the role of learning and education.

It focuses on early outcomes of an evaluation (directed by Professor Kingston) of the project Brightlife which aims to tackle social isolation among older people living in West Cheshire. Older people are involved in all aspects of the project and have representatives on key working and strategic groups. Brightlife and its partners cater for a wide range of interests and promote many learning activities and experiences. They design and fund interventions that provide older people with the confidence, means and opportunity to overcome loneliness and social isolation.
