Description

What is Talk Boost?

Talk Boost is a targeted and evidence-based intervention programme which supports language delayed children in Reception and Key Stage One (KS1) to make progress with their language and communication skills. The programme is delivered in primary schools by classroom teachers and assistants and provides a structured programme that accelerates children’s progress in language and communication by an average of 18 months after a ten week intervention. Since its launch, over 30,000 children have benefited from the programme.

Who is the Talk Boost intervention aimed at?

Talk Boost is aimed at 4-7 year olds with delayed speech, language and communication. These children often have difficulties with reading, writing, and spelling and are more likely to have behavioural issues.

How is the group intervention delivered?

Children who are identified with delayed language will attend three Talk Boost sessions per week in small groups, each lasting 30-40 minutes. Each session is run by a Talk Boost trained Teaching Assistant who understands the importance of the different components of language and how they are introduced and practised throughout the 10 weeks. In addition to this the Class Teacher will run a weekly whole-class activity and there are activities that can be practiced at home.

Who is Talk Boost Key Stage 1 training for?

Talk Boost training is for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 teachers and teaching assistants in training pairs. It is important that staff attend in teacher and teaching assistant training pairs, as this is the structure that the intervention is based around. Single places can be purchased for an additional teacher or a teaching assistant but you must already have purchased tickets for a training pair.

What will I learn?

  • The training will give participants the skills and knowledge to understand the rationale behind Talk Boost, identify appropriate children, measure their progress and deliver the intervention successfully.

How is this training delivered to you?

  • Talk Boost is a one day course.
  • There will be several short breaks and a longer 30 minute break for lunch.
  • Please bring your own lunch with you.
  • Tea and coffee refreshments will be provided at the venue.

How does Talk Boost support Ofsted?

Ofsted currently evaluates the standards in communication and how schools narrow the gap between children with the lowest and highest attainment. Talk Boost can assist primary schools to meet Ofsted’s judgement criteria by:

  • Using our Classroom Checklist, Progression Tool and Child Attitude Survey to measure and analyse progress which supports Pupil Premium.
  • Improving pupils’ behaviour by developing their attention, listening and communication skills.
  • Aiding you to focus on those early communication skills that can reduce the gap widening on literacy and numeracy.
  • Helping you identify children who need additional support by using our evaluation tools.

How much does Talk Boost cost?

SLT for Kids have Licensed Tutors who deliver training. Ticket options are:

  • Training for 1 training pair (1 teacher and 1 teaching assistant) = £200
  • If you would like to include an additional single ticket (£100), e.g. if you have an additional Teaching Assistant you would like to be trained, then please contact SLT for Kids to request an additional ticket.
  • You must have already purchased the Talk Boost resource kit through I CAN before you can receive the training. We do not provide these intervention materials. They can be bought at:
