I Fow You

What you’ll do

Join a hands-on, creative workshop where you can playfully experiment with light, colour, shadows and projection to create your own large-scale, moving artworks. This is a space to play, explore, and create without fear of getting it wrong - just bring your curiosity.

The workshop will be led by artists Maral Mamaghanizadeh and Alice Bowen-Churchill from Spectroscope, and is inspired by the exhibitions '1880 THAT' by Christine Sun Kim & Thomas Mader, and 'Finger Talk' by Cathy Mager.

Together, we’ll explore what it feels like to live with the threat of losing one’s language and the expressive power of our hand gestures and movements - whether or not you know British Sign Language.

This workshop will be guided in BSL, with voice over interpreters available for non-signers.

There will be a chill-out room available with low lighting, comfortable seating, cushions, mats, ear defenders, earplugs and sensory toys.

Who can come

This workshop is for people aged 14 to 19 years old and disabled people aged 14 to 25 years old.

About your artists

Maral Mamaghanizadeh

Maral is a British-Iranian jewellery maker and visual artist. Her practice challenges traditional ideas of jewellery as purely decorative, instead using it as a tool for personal and political storytelling. As a Deaf artist, Maral’s work draws on her lived experiences as a woman, refugee, and member of the Deaf community. Maral is also the founder of SignLoom Studios, a platform dedicated to creating inclusive immersive experiences and empowering the Deaf community in digital spaces.

Alice Bowen-Churchill

Alice is a multidisciplinary artist and educator who explores the intersection of light, projection, and collaborative engagement. Her practice considers chance encounters to create immersive experiences that invite audience participation and co-creation.

Need to know

Location

We’ll be in the Studio on level 1. When you enter Wellcome Collection, head up the stairs or take the lift, then follow the signs.

Place not guaranteed

Booking a ticket for a free, in-person event does not guarantee you a place. You should aim to arrive 15 minutes before the event is scheduled to start to claim your place. If you do not arrive on time, your place may be given to someone on the waiting list.

Waiting list

If this event is fully booked, you may still be able to attend. We will operate a waiting list, which opens 30 minutes before this event starts. Arrive early, and we’ll give you a numbered ticket. If there are any unfilled places just before the start time, we will invite you to enter in order of ticket number.

British Sign Language interpreted

This event will have British Sign Language interpretation.

Relaxed

This is a relaxed event, which means that if you need to, you are welcome to move around and make noise at any time.
