Midlothian’s Early Learning and Childcare Team are please to invite you to a FREE conference at Gore Glen Primary on 21st May 2018 (in service day)

Suitable for anyone working within the Early Years sector in Midlothian.

Morning speakers:

Bruce Adamson - Children and Young People's Commissioner Scotland

Before becoming the Commissioner in May 2017, Bruce worked as a lawyer. In this role, he built up over 20 years of experience working on children’s rights issues.

Lian Higgins - Cowgate Early Years Practitioner.

Lian joined Cowgate in January 2003. Other than a very brief spell at a private nursery, her entire career in early years has been honed and developed at Cowgate. She is passionate about the Froebelian ethos practiced at the Cowgate and is currently involved in an international project on the voice of the child.

Afternoon Speakers:

Colin Morrison - Co-Director of Children's Parliament.

Colin's professional background began in teaching, then in community-based youth social work and children's play. All the work of Children's Parliament is based around relationships and children's rights.

Prof. John Davis - BA in Childhood practice lecturer, Edinburgh University.

John is always keen to collaborate with local and national organisations to improve outcomes for children, young people and families. He help develop strength based approaches and supports professionals to under-pin their practice with ideas of social justice, participation and anti-discrimination.

Dr Lynn McNair OBE - Head of Cowgate Centre in Edinburgh’s Old Town.

As Lynn has progressed in her career she has found herself being interested in ‘listening to children’ and really hearing what they say; children’s agency and children’s rights are also areas she is passionate about. Lynn is also an endorsed Froebel trainer and is one of the original founders of the Froebel in Early Years Practice Course run by Edinburgh University.

This event will be run twice through the day so please select the session you'd like to attend.

Morning session

  • 8.45am - registration and refreshments

  • 9am - conference starts

  • 12.10 - conference ends

Afternoon session

  • 12.15pm - Registration and refreshments

  • 12:30 conference starts

  • 15:45 conference ends


In each session, you will be able to attend 2 of 4 workshops. Selection can be made on the day.

  1. The capable child – What is childhood? - exploring values, beliefs and powers in the nursery

  2. ASN disability rights - exploring values, beliefs and powers in the nursery. Being creative with barriers to learning

  3. Participation as consultation – hearing the child’s voice

  4. How the UNCRC shapes eary years practice.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child - Article 42 states ‘Government must actively work to make sure children and adults know about the convention’


Will we get lunch?

Unfortunately, lunch will not be provided.

You are welcome to bring your own lunch which you can eat while you visit some of the stall that will be set up in the open space.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available throughout the session.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Parking is limited so please car share where possible.

Bus: No's 29, 30, 33, 40, 42, x62 & x95. Some of these buses stop in Gorebridge so you'd need to walk.

Trains: Borders Railway - disembark at Newtongrange and walk (about 20 mins) or get the bus along to the school.

Is my ticket transferrable?

Yes - if you can't make it it would be great if you could find a replacement from your team rather than cancel. However, if you need to cancel please let Jackie know asap otherwise you may be charged a non attendance fee of £10.
