Event description
Would you like to learn the basics, just to satisfy your own interest, in a totally informal, relaxed and friendly way?

About this Event

If yes, then please sign up for these totally free, 60 minute each, illustrated talks.

The sessions are presented as ‘one friend explaining the subject to another’. Indeed that is exactly how they started when two friends of the presenter said to him that they “knew nothing about the First World War”.

They are NOT academic courses; there are no exams, tests or homework; there are no qualifications. No prior knowledge of the subject is needed. The ‘evening classes’ are given by Robert Wellen, who is not an academic or teacher; rather he is someone who has had a lifelong interest in history and in particular the First World War (since visiting the Western Front battlefields and cemeteries in the 1980s), who enjoys talking about the subject and who has a Masters Degree in History from Lancaster University. Robert lives in Dorset, the county of his birth, is a church bell ringer and is retired from working in London for the Central Administration of the Church of England.

Session 1: Europe and the World in the run-up to war 1871-1914.

Session 2: The outbreak of war in 1914.

Session 3: The conduct of the war 1914-17.

Session 4: How the war ended 1918-19–the Armistice and Peace Treaty.

If you would like to give a donation to charity after these talks:

The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF) aims to engage and educate people-especially the young-with the work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), and the inspiring stories of the men and women who died whilst fighting in the two world wars.

The CWGF is an independent charity registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales (charity number 1171947)
