Join Knowle West Media Centre for a special preview of a new collection of artist-made fashion and homeware pieces that mix tattoo culture and digital fabrication technology.
I Will Always Have You is inspired by the rich tattoo heritage of Knowle West and explores the shifting cultural significance of tattoos in people’s lives, including the power of personal narratives and myths in the construction of identity, and tattoos as a repository of remembrances.
The collection includes wall-paper, handbags, clothing and jewellery, presented by the artists Schram&Sandhu, Jacky Puzey, Emma McCusker and Helen Sullivan.
It pulses with provenance: the stories that inspired the individual pieces; the relationships that developed between local residents and individual artists; the collaboration and exchange that evolved between artists and makers.
I Will Always Have You offers a glimpse of the future in terms of what is possible through community micro-manufacturing. It turns the promise of digital fabrication technologies such as 3D printers and laser cutters into a reality. Instead of being shut away in commercial and university R&D labs, the tools, materials and processes of the much-heralded next industrial revolution are held in community spaces and alive with people’s passions and everyday rituals.
Drinks will be served.
