Event description

Description

John Roberts- ' A Life of Leisure'

John Roberts has (perhaps uniquely) been the structural engineer for no less than 3 of the principal award –winning projects honoured by the Institution of Structural Engineers “Structural Awards” programme, spread out over a 25 year period.

John’s talk will feature three projects, each displaying a combination of innovation, attention to detail and client feedback during their operations. “The Big One” steel rollercoaster at Blackpool Pleasure Beach (1994) was the world’s tallest coaster and was partly designed in Manchester and partly in Salt Lake City. This was followed by the iconic London Eye (2000) which introduced a host of technical innovations that have been copied (not always so successfully) by all subsequent big Ferris wheels.

The third and most recent project is the British Airways i360 moving observation tower, which stands on Brighton beach and was completed in 2016. It features exemplary structural engineering design and was honoured with the 2017 Supreme Award for structural engineering excellence by IStructE. As well as acting as the engineer for the design and construction, John is the Chief Engineer /Director of the owner and operator of the attraction which gives him a unique insight into all aspects of the project.
