Event description
A benefit concert by world renowned pianist & former pupil, Ian Hobson, Class of 1963, to support the music department at the school.

About this Event

We are delighted to welcome Ian Hobson, Class of 1963, back to play a benefit concert to support the City of Culture 2021 school commission and music department.

Pianist and conductor Ian Hobson—called “powerful and persuasive” by The New York Times— is recognized internationally for his command of an extraordinarily comprehensive repertoire, his consummate performances of the Romantic masters, his deft and idiomatic readings of neglected piano music old and new, and his assured conducting from both the piano and the podium.

As guest soloist, Ian Hobson has appeared with many of the world’s major orchestras; these include the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the American Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Scottish National Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and many more.

One of the youngest ever graduates of the Royal Academy of Music, Ian began his international career in 1981 when he won First Prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition, after having earned silver medals at both the Arthur Rubinstein and Vienna-Beethoven competitions. Ian studied at Cambridge University and at Yale University, in addition to his earlier studies at the Royal Academy of Music and of course, King Henry VIII School Coventry.

We are extremely grateful of Ian’s support and we welcome pupils, parents, Old Coventrians’, friends of the school and music lovers to purchase tickets for this one-off event in aid of raising funds for the music department. Tickets can be purchased on line here and via the school reception.

The programme includes the following:
