On Monday 3rd June we will be hosting an IAS Friends and Fellows Lunch, where we will be joined by all Fellows here for a week of activity for the IAS Festival of Failure - Professor Antulio J. Echevarria II, Professor Niels Ørtenblad, Associate Professor Wyke Stommel & Professor Ruqiang Yan. We are also joined by our IAS Residential Fellow for June, Dr Rudabeh Shahid.

Professor Antulio J. Echevarria II (US Army War College)

Professor Echevarria is currently Editor of the US Army War College Quarterly, Parameters. He has authored four books on conflict related topics and has specifically addressed the issue of failure. Professor Echevarria is a graduate of the US Military Academy, West Point, and had a distinguished military career. He has also held a NATO Fulbright and has been a Visiting Research Fellow at Oxford University.

Professor Niels Ørtenblad (University of Southern Denmark)

Niels Ørtenblad is professor of muscle physiology based at the University of Southern Denmark. His research is focused on basic mechanisms linking cell energy production with energy utilization, with special reference to mechanisms of muscle fatigue. In his research he has used various techniques from the whole-body level to mechanically skinned muscle fibres, and organelles.

Associate Professor Wyke Stommel (Radboud University)

Associate Professor Stommel's research concerns spoken and digital communication in institutional environments. Varying from video consultations in the medical domain to instant messaging for counseling and interaction with robots: on the basis of the methods of conversation analysis she studies how people achieve goals, construct identities and build relationships step by step verbally and non-verbally in their communication. She frequently works in interdisciplinary teams, also in direct collaboration with (medical) professionals. Thus, the research directly contributes to/ provides new insights in their work.

Professor Ruqiang Yan (Xi’an Jiaotong University)

Ruqiang Yan is a Full Professor and Director of International Machinery Center at the School of Mechanical Engineering, Xi’an Jiaotong University, China. He is engaged in research on theoretical methods and engineering applications related to intelligent operation and maintenance of high-end equipment.

Dr Rudabeh Shahid (Oberlin College)

Dr. Rudabeh Shahid is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center and a Senior Consultant at the European Institute for International Law and International Relations. Dr. Shahid is also a Visiting Assistant Professor of Politics at Oberlin College. Previously, she was a postdoctoral fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Science at the New College of Florida, and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Politics at the University of York. Additionally, she teaches and moderates courses on South Asia at the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of the U.S. Department of State.
