Scope

On behalf of the organising committee of the Image-Based Finite Element Method for Industry (IBFEM-4i) event, we are delighted to invite you to participate in this recently launched initiative to develop the community of image-based modelling users in industry.

Image-based meshing is the process by which 3D images (e.g. X-ray CT or laser scanning) are converted into ultra-high resolution simulations. 3D imaging is increasingly being used in the industrial sector for inspection, non-destructive testing / evaluation (NDT/NDE) and metrology but image-based modelling is still an underutilised technique. Our aim is that the activities of IBFEM-4i will facilitate a wider adoption of image-based modelling and provide a platform to discuss the cutting-edge developments in the field.

In particular, we will explore how this can contribute towards achieving a true Digital Twin. Ever better monitoring systems combined with machine learning are what are facilitating the closing of control loops for fully automated production. This is an important step to the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) which also encompasses smart supply chains and how Digital Manufacturing and Big Data Analytics will bring forward a stepwise change in manufacturing.

IBFEM-4i will be the ideal forum for the fostering of ideas and the establishing of new collaborative links, helping to build strong networks within UK and at an international level. Attendance will also give you the unique opportunity to visit Swansea Bay, one of the most vibrant cities in Wales and, crucially, to get to know the place where the history of the finite element method began more than 50 years ago.

Format

The event will consist of two parts:

  • Day 1-2: user training of the various techniques required for image-based modelling

  • Day 3-4: users’ workshop with keynote talks, presentations and a networking reception

Who should attend

The training is intended for academic researchers and industry professionals who are newly interested in image-based modelling or want to build on their basic understanding of this powerful technique.

The workshop is intended for academic researchers and industry professionals interested in learning about applications of image-based modelling in manufacturing and new exciting ways it may be coupled with machine learning to drive digital twin technology.
