Description

EVENING LECTURE: Aesthetics and Art Therapy

Tuesday 26th February 2019 from 6.15pm

This lecture explores the links, resonance and challenges between the work of contemporary artists and art therapy practice and theory. It focuses on the work of the performance artists Marina Abramović and Uwe Laysiepen, known as Ulay, intending to explore the dialog between the artistic expression and the human condition and experience. Concepts and ideas arising from Abramović’s and Ulay’s collaborative work and Abramović’s solo performances are placed in dialog with the multifaceted nature of the therapeutic alliance and process. Aspects of Abramovic’s and Ulay’s performances and the notion of their collaborative experience are linked to the characteristics of the psychotherapeutic relationship and its varied dynamics and manifestations. Emphasis is placed on the importance of the emotional interaction between patient and therapist. The interplay between man and woman and ideas revolving around the endpoints of relationships are examined from artistic and psychotherapeutic point of view.

More about ICAPT's Evening Lectures Series: Drawing on Evidence in Arts Psychotherapies

The ICAPT team, colleagues and partners will be presenting some of their ideas that are at the heart of what drives their interest in developing research informed practice in arts psychotherapies. Each seminar is about practice, how we process, make sense of and analyse clinical scenarios within health care contexts and the unique contribution of the arts to these processes. They take a personal view, offer emerging research and evidence, explore new formulations and most of all will be creating dialogues between our members and the wider world. We will provide light refreshments for an informal evening of presentations, discussions and the occasional arts collaboration. We welcome people from all professions and perspectives to discuss with us key themes in the arts psychotherapies world, what we do with evidence and how we continue to develop and promote innovation in health care.
