Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

‘Whenever I get on the underground or jump on the bus, I feel like the visa of illegality is stamped on my back. When I sit beside someone and perhaps they have an uncomfortable moment or look at me in a strange way I think – maybe this guy realises I’m illegal...’

Who are the ‘illegals’? Why are they here? What do they do? These are the questions explored in The Illegals a rehearsed reading of the personal accounts of four undocumented migrants living and working in London by members of ice&fire’s Actors for Human Rights network.

By presenting their diverse and illuminating experiences, The Illegals gives a platform to the individuals behind the stereotype. The script for this performance is written by ice&fire’s artistic director, Christine Bacon.

ICE&FIRE is a London-based charity and theatre company established in 2003, that places current human rights themes at the centre of all of their work. Through active engagement with some of the most urgent issues of our time, they create high quality work that inspires artists and audiences to engage more fully with human rights issues. In all of their work, they aim to foreground and provide a platform for marginalized voices, from refugees and asylum seekers both here and abroad, to British citizens struggling with issues around poverty and inequality. They have been recognised by the prestigious Liberty Human Rights Award for our contribution to building a human rights culture in the UK.
