Event description

Description

November 23rd at 5pm, St George’s Building, Room 0.20, Professor Steve Savage and John Grieve will be giving the lecture - “The Justice Web: Making Sense of the Rise and Rise of ‘Historic’ (Non-Recent) Investigations and Inquiries.”

A striking feature of early 21st Century British criminal justice has been the plethora of ‘re-examinations of the past’ - often the distant past - whereby events which took place some decades earlier are subjected to renewed investigation, inquiry or review Ranging from ‘legacy’ investigations into the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland, through a series of re-examinations of the Hillsborough disaster, to the widespread investigations of and inquiries into non-recent child abuse cases, this re-examination of the past has been widespread and far-reaching.

This lecture asks three main questions. First, what have been the key driving forces setting the agendas for such re-examinations of the past? Second, what are the relationships, if any, between the seemingly diverse range of non-recent investigations? Third, what are the specific investigative challenges which non-recent investigations and inquiries present?
