Event description
Our conference aims to assess the sustainability of a nuclear power plant over its lifetime, with speakers from across the industry.

About this Event

The ICO CDT in Nuclear Energy is the collaborative Centre for Doctoral Training between Imperial College London, Cambridge University and the Open University.

  • Sustainability has many aspects and can be very broad depending on the context. More recent descriptions look towards the dimensions of ecological, economic, political and cultural sustainability. Is it equitable and viable? Is it environmentally-friendly and produce no CO2 emissions? Is it renewable? Does it meet current beliefs and ideas? Is it secure? Does it not adversely impact health and wellbeing?

  • Evaluating sustainability can be difficult. Many organisations do not consider nuclear power to be renewable, but renewability is only one aspect of sustainability, and as nations move to combat climate change and energy demands, can nuclear power meet the sustainable development criteria?

  • The goal of our conference is to assess the sustainability of a nuclear power plant over its lifetime. Nuclear fuel elements are sufficiently abundant to provide power for thousands of years, but what about the CO2 emissions for pouring the concrete for the building? We’re gathering speakers from across the nuclear industry to talk about their sustainability and to see what is being done and what can be done to improve in the future.
