Event description

Description

The Icon Ethnography group is excited to host a talk by Alex Cantrill and Helen Merrett on the heritage preservation work in the Balkans undertaken by Cultural Heritage Without Borders (CHwB).

After originally volunteering with Heritage without Borders (HwB) as part of a joint project with CHwB, the team members now work independently with CHwB, an independent Swedish non-governmental organisation who have been running award winning Regional Restoration Camps throughout the Balkans since 2007. CHwB is dedicated to rescuing and preserving cultural heritage affected by conflict, neglect or human and natural disaster, whilst also aiming to bridge together communities.

In a region where virtually no formal training is available and resources are limited, the camp provides a chance for participants to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to ensure the longevity of the region's rich collections. Theoretical and practical collections care and conservation skills are taught through a series of lectures and hands on work, working directly with collections from the Museum of the City of Mitrovica.

Ultimately, the camp has had a far greater impact than just the dissemination of preservation knowledge. The participants come from cultures that have often never mixed before; many of whom hold very traditional and deep-felt prejudices against each other. The camp creates the opportunity to build friendships and break down barriers, highlighting, through learning, the shared heritage of the participants – an incredible privilege that CHwB team members witness as part of their work.

The talk will be followed by our group AGM where the Ethnography committee will update members on recent and future group activities. Wine, soft drinks and snacks will be served.
Please note: The Theatre Showroom is only accessible by stairs.
