About this event

Community • City & Town

Walk a mile in the steps of some of the most extraordinary people of the last 125 years who turned Railton Road from a residential street to the front line of change, joy and community. From Black Power to piano, from TV shows and poetry, politics and Pan Africanism to soundsystems, they brought talents from around the world and put a Brixton slant that would reshape the area and far beyond.

Our icons are people, places and projects you will get to know more about, perhaps discover for the first time or that you have first hand experience of. This guided walk is designed to be part of a community project on Railton Road's unique history with participants invited to share memories and knowledge as part of Black History Month.

Please meet at the side of 198 Arts and Contemporary Learning at the corner of Hurst Street for an 11am start. Our tour will take 90 minutes and finish by Brixton House Theatre.

This is the day clocks go back. You get an extra hour in bed but make sure to check your timings!

Is the guided tour step free?

Yes, we also have dropped curbs throughout and some seating and rest spots along the way.

Are there toilets on the guided tour?

The closest toilet to the start point is a well known coffee chain opposite Herne Hill station. We end near public toilets.

Is this guided tour dog and child friendly?

Please exercise your discretion about your dog's comfort level with a large group of people. Any dogs must be on a leash. All ages of children are welcome but please consider their enjoyment level of heritage for their age considering one stop is opposite an ice cream parlour!

Will the weather impact this tour?

Tours will be only be cancelled due to extreme weather as advised by the Met Office. Otherwise please check the forecast and come prepared. I suggest wrapping up warm for tours as they can be chillier than you think when you hear the word walk!

Do you offer refunds?

You can request a refund up to 24 hours before the walk starts if you are unwell or plans change. You will be refunded if I have to cancel the tour due to unforeseen circumstances.

Have you run this guided tour before?

Yes! A shortened free version featured in 2024's Open House Weekend. The longer paid version sold out and is returning due to popular demand. Also you might have seen it featured on the BBC London News last year so it seems familiar :)
