Description

This course, run by the Lancashire Adult Learning Team, focuses on the core basic ICT skills to enable people to develop confidence in using ICT to support them in everyday life. You will look at various elements e.g. email, internet, file management, word processing, keeping yourself safe online. The course will be personal to the individual and learners will be able to learn the skills they want to learn and do not need to cover all topics if they do not wish to.

If learners want to develop further skills they will be signposted to other courses.

At the end of the course you will be able to:

  1. Describe three key risks associated with staying safe online
  2. Explore how the internet could benefit you
  3. Use a personal email account
  4. Create and edit a document using Microsoft Word
  5. Save work in an appropriate storage area
  6. Create a spreadsheet using Microsoft Excel

What are the course entry requirements?

This course is at our Beginners Level, however you may have some basic experience of using a computer, and/or have been on the Mouse and Keyboard course. Learners may want to develop their skills for work, home life or job seeking skills.

In order to attend this course you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English at Entry Level 2 and above. You should be able to:

  • Follow a simple set of instructions and be able to write in sentences using capital letters, full stops and question marks.
  • Spell common words correctly, proof read, correct spellings and use a dictionary where appropriate.

How long is the course?

The course runs through the year and learners can join at any point. On the first session you will have a 1:1 with your teacher where you will decide what elements of IT you want to learn and how many session you will attend. It is important that once you have started the course that you attend every week and do not miss sessions.

How will I know if I am making progress?

An Initial Assessment activity at the start of the course will enable your teacher to assess your starting point. In every class we acknowledge and accommodate for different levels of skill and experience, so students will be encouraged to identify and work on own areas for improvement.

You will complete an Individual Learning Plan where you will set personal learning goals and targets which will be reviewed by both you and the teacher throughout the course.

During the course you will have the opportunity to discuss your progress with the teacher and you will receive feedback on a one to one basis on how well you are doing. Your progress will be checked using a variety of techniques including observation, question and answer and group discussion.

What course work will I be expected to complete?

You will have chosen the topics you want to cover and will complete a variety of tasks during class time. You will be given supplementary tasks to complete as homework as further practice. You will be expected to complete any homework that is set as this will assist with building your confidence in using your computer skills as part of daily life.

Additional Information

The course is free. Pens and paper would be recommended for the purpose of note taking although handouts and online activities will be made available, and a file will be necessary for your course work.

What can I do next?

This course provides an ideal platform to enable you to progress on to a Functional ICT course, where you will be able to study at an appropriate level for you, entry 2 – level 2. Functional Skills are practical skills, and will provide you with essential knowledge, skills and understanding that will enable you to operate confidently, effectively and independently in life and work.
