Ida Lupino

One of the very few women filmmakers to come to prominence in Hollywood during the 1940s and 50s, London-born Ida Lupino (1918 – 1995) is perhaps best known for The Hitch-Hiker, a taut, tense 1953 film noir based on a real-life case of an escaped convict holding two men hostage. This richly illustrated lecture will explore four of her films, including The Hitch-Hiker and discuss how Lupino merges some of the formal and thematic elements of noir with a ripped-from-the-headlines immediacy.
