Ida Lupino: Between Film Noir and the Social Problem Film
About this event
This talk by Dr Pasquale Iannone (Senior Teaching Fellow in Film Studies) is part of our Summer Film series, organised in association with Berwick Film Society. You can book here for this talk; alternatively you can book for all three lectures by clicking here.
One of the very few women filmmakers to come to prominence in Hollywood during the 1940s and 50s, London-born Ida Lupino (1918 – 1995) is perhaps best known for The Hitch-Hiker, a taut, tense 1953 film noir based on a real-life case of an escaped convict holding two men hostage. This richly illustrated lecture will explore four of her films, including The Hitch-Hiker and discuss how Lupino merges some of the formal and thematic elements of noir with a ripped-from-the-headlines immediacy.
The Hitch-Hiker is available on Amazon Prime and you Tube.
Lectures will be delivered via Zoom. If you haven't used Zoom before, please go to www.zoom.us and look at the tutorials. Once you have booked, you will find the Zoom invitation in the Online Event Page on Eventbrite. You will also receive an email with the invitation 24 hours before the event.
