The series of training

This is a series of online peer skills-sharing sessions exploring key areas of museum management with the aim of helping museums improve their welcome in all areas of their work.

Each session will cover a different theme and support delegates to develop new practices and think through creating some workable and realistic actions related to the theme.

Together the series aims to enable participating museums to become more representational of, and relevant to, its local communities.

You can drop in and out of the series as you wish, and do not need to attend every session.

You can book onto the other sessions by clicking the links below:

Trainers:

  • Claire Ferdinando, Museum Development South West
  • Rebecca Raybone, Curator, Bethlem Museum of the Mind
  • Rachael Crofts, Museum Development London

What will be covered?

Tips for museums who are wanting to develop more inclusive exhibitions, projects, programmes and events with and for their visitors.

Who should attend?

Trustees, museum managers and volunteers. This series aims to support those interested in welcoming a wider range of people to their museums, both behind the scenes and as visitors. It is not aimed at museums with a current EDI action plan.

Learning objectives

Each session will provide delegates with theme-related:

Key resources to use

  • Case Studies from museums on their approach to addressing the theme
  • Speakers from support organisations that can further support you
  • Opportunities to ask questions of the speakers, MD staff and other delegates to support your work
  • Quick and easier action point(s) to implement within its museum (each delegate will be asked to share one action they will be taking back to the museum at the end of the session).

Accessibility

To help us ensure you get the most out of the session, you will be asked to email us with any access requirements you may have when you complete your order form. Please see the list of examples of adjustments we can make. This list is not exhaustive and we would be happy to accommodate other requirements where possible, please email us to discuss.

Eligibility

MDSE is funded by Arts Council England (ACE) to support museums in the South East of England within ACE’s Accreditation scheme. The South East is defined as the local authority areas of:

  • Bedfordshire (Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire and Luton Borough)
  • Berkshire (Bracknell Forest, Reading, Slough, West Berkshire, Windsor & Maidenhead and Wokingham)
  • Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes
  • Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
  • Essex, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock
  • Hertfordshire
  • Kent and Medway
  • Norfolk
  • Oxfordshire
  • Suffolk
  • Surrey
  • East Sussex and Brighton & Hove
  • West Sussex

We prioritise places on our training programmes for museums which are Accredited or officially Working Towards Accreditation. ACE publishes the official lists of Accredited and Working Towards Accreditationmuseums on its website. Where possible we will make places available for museums which do not meet these criteria but the number of places will vary depending on the event format.
