DIY higher education in the global swamp?

Thursday 5 December 2013

274 Banbury Road, Summertown,

What single idea would change education in the UK?

Fellows across the South Central region were asked to propose ideas (and host events) that they believe can change education for the better.

The idea:  Off campus and off limits: DIY higher education in the global swamp?

Join us for a discussion on the future of higher education to round off the Ideas in Education series.

The event will include a short presentation by Richard Hayward, followed by group discussions and a plenary.

What do you need to (re)create a university experience for all?

  • Issues to solve
  • People interested in the issues
  • Places to meet
  • Access to information, people and their places
  • Facilitators & mentors

What might you expect to gain from this?

  • Knowledge
  • Understanding (reflection-in-action)
  • Skills

And, through iterations: a flexible, creative, ‘life-long learning’ approach to the challenges of living and learning in the changing world.

For this debate, the availability of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), the Open University, TED, and the terrific lecture and seminar clips provided (mostly) by US universities are acknowledged as giving open access to many areas of scholarship and research.

But the ability to engage knowledge in the world positively and critically, rather than just knowledge of the world (research) remains a fundamental challenge for us all, particularly at a time when formal higher education is in danger of fulfilling a diminishing role as a primary engine of social mobility.

You are invited to come along to discuss potential new futures for higher education.

About the Ideas in Education Series

In 2013 the South Central Region of the RSA will hold a series of events aimed at sharing ideas about education.  These events will be run by and for RSA Fellows with the aims of:

  • Sharing knowledge and ideas about education
  • Meeting and networking with other Fellows
  • Clarifying existing and provoking new ideas for potential project
  • Sharing information on Catalyst funding which could potentially support the growth of the ideas

The RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) is an enlightenment organisation committed to finding innovative practical solutions to today’s social challenges. With a 27,000-strong Fellowship exhibiting immeasurable amounts of knowledge, talent and skill, the best place to start is to share an idea.
