Planning Educational Spaces

Thursday 14th November 2013

6.30pm

Architecture PLB, Winchester

What single idea would change education in the UK?

Fellows across the South Central region were asked to propose ideas (and host events) that they believe can change education for the better.

The idea: Planning Educational Spaces

Nick Mirchandani and Rupert Cook of Architecture PLB will discuss trends in how schools and universities commission learning spaces.

ArchitecturePLB has over 30 years involvement in the design and delivery of learning spaces.

Rather than being educationalists themselves, Nick and Rupert are observers of educational trends.

Over the last decade they witnessed a convergence of ideas and an increasing overlap in the educational rationale behind the design of new schools, colleges and universities.

Since 2010 however, school briefings have changed, with a trend moving towards a more traditional, didactic model.  During this seminar they will share their observations, invite your own and explore collaboratively the implications of this shift and the likely impact on learners and learning.

About the Ideas in Education Series

In 2013 the South Central Region of the RSA will hold a series of events aimed at sharing ideas about education.  These events will be run by and for RSA Fellows with the aims of:

  • Sharing knowledge and ideas about education
  • Meeting and networking with other Fellows
  • Clarifying existing and provoking new ideas for potential project
  • Sharing information on Catalyst funding which could potentially support the growth of the ideas

The RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) is an enlightenment organisation committed to finding innovative practical solutions to today’s social challenges. With a 27,000-strong Fellowship exhibiting immeasurable amounts of knowledge, talent and skill, the best place to start is to share an idea.
