Branko Deljanin, B.Sc., GG, DGA, FGA, DUG of Gemmological Research Industries Inc, Canada will present this one-day workshop.
9am - 12.45pm: IDENTIFICATION OF NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC DIAMONDS
You will learn about -
- Types of diamonds based on nitrogen and boron content
- Colourless and natural diamonds: sources, characteristics and identification
- Methods of growing HPHT and CVD diamonds
- Inclusions in natural and synthetic diamonds
- UV lamp - reaction of different types of diamonds under LW and SW UV light
- CPF (cross polarized filters) method and instrumentation to screen and ID diamonds
- Problems and solution in identification of melee natural and synthetic diamonds
Practical -
- Samples of Ia, IIa, IIb, Ib diamonds (natural and synthetic origin) are tested with microscopes, UV lamp ('PL inspector'), mini polariscope with light, EXA spectrometer.
1.45 - 5.30pm: SCREENING FOR TREATMENTS OF NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC DIAMONDS
- Clarity and Colour Enhancements - unstable (fracture filling and coating)
- Clarity Enhancements - stable (traditional lasering, KM laser drilling)
- Testing and screening methods for treated diamonds with standard instruments
- Post treatments of CVD-grown colourless diamonds (by HPHT press)
- ID of mounted synthetic diamonds with EXA spectrometer and screening instruments.
Practical -
- 80 colourless diamonds are tested with microscopes, PL/Jewellery Inspectors, portable polariscopes, portable spectrometer (EXA) for natural, treated or synthetic origin.
Branko is an expert in identification of natural, treated and synthetic diamonds and coloured stones. He is highly skilled in the use of traditional gem-testing instruments as well as advanced spectrometers in detection of new diamond treatments.
He has led research programs on gems in many countries and is a well known speaker and instructor and is published in various books, papers and articles.
At this in person workshop there will be lots of samples of diamonds to be examined and instruments available to use.
- A certificate of completion will be issued to all participants.
- Books authored by Branko will be available to purchase in the Gem-A Instruments shop onsite at Gem-A, and if purchased on the day you can get them signed.
Who should attend?
This workshop is intermediate to advanced level designed for gemmologists, jewellers and valuers. To attend you should have at least an intermediate level of gemmological knowledge, including a strong grasp of professional diamond knowledge.
NOTE: Tickets are available for the full day or for a half day only, please select your preference when purchasing.
